russian Diplomatic Facilities in Vienna Are Being Used for Electronic Intelligence
3/18/2026

The use of russian diplomatic facilities in Vienna as platforms for electronic intelligence is not new to intelligence agencies, but it has now been publicly confirmed. The Financial Times reports this, citing data from Western secret services and experts.
According to their information, satellite antennas on the roofs of russian diplomatic missions in Austria’s capital are mainly directed westward and are used to intercept government and military communications of NATO countries, as well as signals in the Middle East and Africa.
The key facility is the “russensity” complex on the banks of the Danube, where the rf’s permanent mission to the UN is located. According to the engineering group NomenNescio, most of the antennas are oriented toward the Eutelsat 3B, Eutelsat 10B, SES-5, and Rascom QAF1 satellites, which provide communication between Europe and Africa. The equipment used allows for operation across an extended signal range.
Austria’s domestic intelligence service DSN warns that such technical capabilities pose significant counterintelligence risks. Regular changes in antenna settings have also been recorded, indicating active intelligence activities.
Vienna remains attractive to russian intelligence services due to Austria’s neutral status. Since 2022, the country has expelled several russian diplomats, though such measures have been far more extensive in other European countries. According to estimates by Austrian intelligence services, a significant portion of the russian diplomatic staff in Vienna is most likely linked to intelligence agencies.
