The Mystery of Mykhailo Hrushevskyi’s Death
4/28/2026

Today’s story is about a man whose name is familiar to anyone interested in Ukrainian history. But even decades after his death, there were still more questions than answers surrounding him. We’re talking about Mykhailo Hrushevskyi.
Documents found in declassified archives of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine show that soviet secret agencies – the nkvd and, later, the kgb – closely monitored Hrushevskyi throughout his life. And even after his death. What’s more, they revisited the circumstances of his mysterious death more than 20 years after the event, which took place on November 24, 1934.
