International Isolation Deprives russian Scientists of Prospects

Years of full-scale aggression against Ukraine, international sanctions, and the isolation of russian scientists from their foreign colleagues have set russia’s science back years. The russians’ inability to obtain information about modern innovative research and achievements only speeds up the process of scientific degradation in the country.

russian scientists are often forced to emigrate in order to continue their careers. Over the past ten years, the number of researchers with scientific degrees in the rf has decreased by 20 %, with fewer doctors of science and candidates of science in all federal districts. With the start of russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine, the process has only accelerated. Neuroscience, mathematics, biochemistry, pharmacology, medicine, and physics have been the most affected.

At the same time, there has been a steady decline in the number of russian researchers with academic degrees due to the aging of the workforce. Young people do not consider a career in science to be promising. Between 2019 and 2024, the number of PhD candidates decreased 2.5 times.
