russia intends to start supplying natural gas to Iran as early as 2025. The plan is to use existing gas pipelines and build new branches.

The existing logistics infrastructure (the Mozdok – Shirvanovka – Khadjikabul – Astara – Abadan gas pipeline) will allow for the supply of up to 1.8 billion cubic meters of gas a year. The gas price is currently being agreed upon, so the exact date of the start of supplies has not  been determined yet.

The planned potential of the new gas project is up to 55 billion cubic meters of gas a year. In early 2025, the parties finally agreed on the route of the new pipeline, which will pass through Azerbaijan.

In addition to gas cooperation, a new nuclear power plant is planned to be built in Iran with  the help  of  the russian loan facility.

The implementation of the gas project creates new opportunities for diversifying russian exports under sanctions. It is also another way to pay off Tehran for its military assistance in the war against Ukraine. For Iran, this is an opportunity to cover the gas shortage for consumers living in the north of the country, as local gas fields are located in the south.
