The volga, the Color of Poison: putin’s River Restoration Project Drowned in Corruption

The russian river volga, which kremlin propaganda has for centuries hailed as “mother”, has officially become the primary symbol of bureaucratic plunder and an environmental apocalypse. In samara, the water near the embankments and recreational areas has turned a vivid acid-green color. Locals are sharing videos of this ecological horror, which hydrologists attribute to an explosive proliferation of toxic cyanobacteria. This toxic sludge is actively spreading due to the constant discharge into the river of dirty, untreated sewage and nitrogen- and phosphorus-based fertilizers from the fields, which have become an ideal breeding ground for the bacteria. At this, russians have not been banned from swimming in the river.

As is becoming evident, the federal “volga restoration” project, which dictator putin boasted about so loudly, has predictably ended in a spectacular fiasco. Nearly 127 billion rubles from taxpayers’ pockets were allocated to save russia’s main waterway, funds for which   local officials have already “found use” without a hitch. However, instead of a clean river, russians ended up with a green swamp.

The government of the rf planned to reduce sewage discharges three-fold, but instead turned the volga into a sewer. As early as 2024, a parliamentary audit revealed that of the 121 funded wastewater treatment facilities, only six met the actual standards. In 2026, nothing has changed – 7,000 cubic meters of municipal sewage flow into the river every day.

For putin’s vertical power structure, this situation is completely normal: russian governors didn’t even show up at construction sites; instead, they sent glossy photo reports to moscow.

The rf’s government system is once again proving its complete inaction in governance. It is capable only of destruction – both of its own country’s environment and that of its neighbors.
